Things I Appreciate About Being Home

Having returned home from the minor holiday excursion to my parents’ house, I find that I am grateful to be here, in my own place, with my own rules and schedule and preferences.

I appreciate:

  1. setting the thermostat at something less than “Tropical Rain Forest in the Heat of the Day.”

  2. eating dinner later than 5:00 p.m.

  3. staying up past 9:30 p.m.

  4. sleeping on a mattress that is firmer than marshmallows.

  5. internet access.

  6. tuning the TV to something other than Fox News.

In other news, N has asked that we have a Kwanzaa celebration this year. To that end, I am planning a dinner for tomorrow night where we will light the kinara, have something of a traditional menu (which I’m sure he will not eat so I am trying to modify at least some things so he won’t complain that he will surely starve), and talk about the seven principles. I’m doing this all based on my internet research plus one children’s book N has about Kwanzaa since none of my African American friends celebrate Kwanzaa, a fact that shocked N who is all about exploring all aspects of his African American heritage. I think he feels somewhat betrayed by the local African American community here that they don’t have some big Kwanzaa celebration. So we will start our own Kwanzaa tradition at home and will celebrate it in our own way and make it our own.

Fox News? You must have stopped by my parents' house! I'm always like, "Mom, can we watch something less mind-numbing, like maybe some reality TV or something?" LOL

I think it's great that you will start a new tradition together- that's so cool. I'm glad that you got home, where you do get discretion in important things like news, and a non-marshmellow mattress!

Oh, and in reference to your comment over at Phyllis' place-

Hugs, that's not a great place to be, I hope and pray things get better for you soon!

I know what you mean about the things you appreciate about being home... My mom was with us for the last five days, and I'm grateful that we fully regained our place with our preferences!

All the best to you and your loved ones. Happy New Year!

Yep, that sounded like my parents place for sure, except my parents (and later my mom) never retired at 9:30pm ever. 11pm was their time.

And you left out Lawrence Welk...

Cocotte - What is it with the old people and Fox News? I don't get it. I just don't get it.

Sailor - There truly is no place like home.

And about the other, I'm working on it along with a shrink, a therapist, and some pharmaceuticals. At least one of those ought to help.

SP - Family: God bless 'em, but don't let 'em stay too long.

Fuse - They were never big Lawrence Welk fans. They are more into Southern Gospel music. You'd be amazed how much of that you can find on TV. Who knew?
