Breaking News

I just found out that one of our neighbor's (no, not Gladys and Abner, the renters on the other side of us) dogs was poisoned and died today. He came over to warn us about it since he knows we have a dog. Because there is snow on the ground you can see the footprints from the sidewalk to the fence and back. Apparently someone walked up and threw something over the fence that was poisoned. According to the vets at the big academic veterinary center where he took the dog for an autopsy, they can tell that it isn't a common household poison and are going to do further tests to see if they can determine what type of poison it was. It was definitely something fast acting since the dog died within minutes after ingesting it.

This is terrifying to me. We have a beautiful dog. He is sweet and gentle and rarely ever barks. He and N are great buddies. I would hate for him to be poisoned by someone. We've closed up the dog door and will accompany him anytime he goes outside for now. We just can't take chances with a close family member.

I can't even imagine what kind of person does something like this. The neighbor said that when he called the police about it they said there has been something of an outbreak of dog poisoning incidents lately in our town. I hope they catch whoever is doing it. You sure wouldn't want me to be the one to catch them. I'm afraid they wouldn't live to tell you about it.

When I was 6, someone poisoned our German Shepard by throwing poisoned food over our fence for him. He was a sweet gentle dog who didn't bark and never left our fenced-in yard unless he was accompanied by someone. It was horrible. I adored that dog.

You are doing the right thing. Take no chances. I am teary-eyed just thinking about this.

My God, what is the world coming to? This is heartbreaking. I agree that dogs are like a well loved member of the family. Keep your dog safe.

Some people are really f*cked up to do that. Keep a close eye on your dog and for having lost a dog that way, there are some sick people out there.

BTW, you should write me something for my other blog "Love is a Four-Legged Word" and send me a picture, I'd love to showcase your dog. Think about it.

(sigh) Just when you think you've scraped the bottom of the 'People Can Be Such Assholes' barrel. . .

Bunny - How awful for you! I simply can't understand what anyone derives from doing such things.

Summer - It truly is heartbreaking. The neighbor is beside himself over the loss just as I would be if it were my dog.

SP - One of these days, I will write up something for your other blog. Our dog is a gem and deserves to be honored that way.

Des - It's a very deep barrel.

Val - I should have expected that of all my readers you would be loaded with emotion on this one. I know you know how they are like your very own babies. I'll never forget how my dad sat out night after night watching over the dog pen after someone stole one of our puppies years ago. He kept his shotgun with him but made sure it was NOT loaded. He just wanted to scare them off and was afraid if it was loaded the temptation to pull the trigger would be too much for him. He wasn't about to let anybody get the second puppy.
